Zachary had his appointment with Lucy's allergist today. I couldn't find a babysitter so I was stuck lugging Lu along for the ride and LONG appointment. Everyone behaved and waited Oh So Patiently through the 2 hour visit.
First, the doctor started with a discussion about Lu, since he hadn't seen her since January. He wanted to ensure we weren't leaving his practice to see another specialist and I reassured him we were not. We really really like this allergist, hes extremely reliable. We also got into a discussion about Lu's skin issues, which he called Dermographia- a condition that allows you to write on one's skin. Whenever the skin is touched or rubbed tiny hives appear on the skin in the pattern it was touched- looking as though the person was written on. It causes a lot of itching and general irritation. The allergist said that this condition will come and go and an antihistamine can help if she flares up again (right now Lucy is not in a flare, her skin has improved significantly in the last few weeks)
The allergist also reiterated that the process of trialing foods is SLOW and we all need to be patient. He said whenever we felt Lucy was ready we could attempt something like 1/2 a grape and see how it goes(which is contradicting the other specialist we see who recommends holding off another year. So we will have to sort through some decision making there) He also said we could feel free to trial a second elemental formula called E028 Splash- which comes in a ready to feed juice box. I asked if he thought we could attempt to work some of it into her diet because of its convenience and the fact the juice box helps out on a social level.
Finally, we got to Little Zac. He took down all the history and symptoms Zachary has had which range from serious stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, poor sleep, etc. Basically he assessed the situation and said that he thinks there is a chance Zachary has an Eosinophilic Disease as well. He ran a skin prick test on Zachary's arms(which Zachary handled like a champ- NO tears) and everything came back negative- Surprise...not! The type of allergies that my husband and children have to foods are delayed onset, which allergy testing doesn't work for. But just to be certain of the type he ran the basic tests. He also is sending out some of Zachary's blood to test for celiacs and other allergies.
So for now, we modify his diet, take careful notes, and reassess to ensure hes feeling much better.
